Serving Up Good Table Manners

In a fine-dining restaurant, then forks and knives line up on the table
like an army waiting for orders. There’s no need to break out in a
nervous sweat, though. By following a few tips, you can be confident
in a formal Western restaurant.

After you have been seated by your waiter, first place
your napkin on your lap. Next, glance at your silverware and
remind yourself to start from the outside and work your way in
with each course. If you are thirsty, reach for the water
glass to the right of your plate.

Now that you're mastered where your glass is and which
utensils to use, you can dig in, right? Wrong. It is polite to wait
until everyone has been served before you begin eating. Another
important rule is to avoid using your cell phone at the table. If there is
an emergency, step away from the table to use it.

At the end of the meal, your napkin should be folded and placed
to the left of your plate. If you make it to this point of dinner without
any faux pas, give yourself a pat on the back and don't forget to tip
your waiter.
